Welcome to Fremont RE-2 School District

Fremont RE-2 School District is a consolidated and joint school district. The district serves the communities of Williamsburg, Rockvale, Coal Creek, Penrose, and Wetmore. Florence is the home of the district's administration offices, Fremont Elementary School, Fremont Middle School, and Florence High School, newly built in 2006. Penrose is home to a K-5 elementary school built in 2005.
Florence is located in close proximity to Canon City, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, and a two-hour drive from Denver.

The Plains and Pueblo Reservoir lie about 20 minutes east of Florence. The area is indeed blessed with great diversity in geography, enterprise and culture. The city of Florence has become a mecca for antique dealers and shoppers. Penrose is rich in agricultural produce, especially apple orchards, and Wetmore is a fertile ranching community

The Climate in the area of the Arkansas Valley has been known as the "Banana Belt". Winters are generally mild and summers are warm but comfortable. Fremont County
is a great place to live and enjoy.

Today, Governor Polis extended the Executive Order specific to closing schools by suspending in-person learning from April 17 to April 30 or until further modified.  The April 30th date aligns with the National Social Distancing guidelines put forth by the Federal Government.
School closures are a key part of the social distancing strategy that officials hope will slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Hang in there, Fremont Re-2!  We can do this!

Governor Order to Extend School Closures

All Fremont Re-2 School Facilities
will be Closed until April 17

Dear Fremont Re-2 Community:

To help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Colorado, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Colorado Governor Jared Polis ordered that all public and private schools across the state suspend in-person learning from March 23 to April 17.

The executive order directs Colorado school districts and the Charter School Institute to make every effort to provide alternative learning opportunities during this time while taking into account the needs of local communities. This order also directs the Commissioner of Education to issue guidance to support P-12 school systems in developing and implementing plans to assist families and students in accessing alternative learning, providing free and reduced lunch and breakfast, and offering waivers for instructional time as appropriate.

“Protecting the health of all Coloradoans is our top priority, and moving to online learning and other ways to support learning at home is absolutely the right thing to do,” said Education Commissioner Katy Anthes. “We know school leaders, educators and families will have a lot of questions about how to support their students’ learning at home during this unprecedented time. The department is working on guidance and developing resources to support our schools and students, and it will be available very soon.”

The Governor made this order via press release this evening. Read it online here: https://www.colorado.gov/governor/news/colorado-takes-further-action-address-public-health-threat-covid-19.  Fremont Re-2 along with many surrounding districts in the region had already decided to close school buildings through March 27. This order will extend that timeframe. At this time, and per this order, students will return to school on Monday, April 20 unless otherwise notified.

While the executive order provides local districts flexibility, it also presents great challenges in how we assist families and students in accessing alternative learning. I appreciate the Governor’s guidance and leadership during this challenging time. I am talking daily with surrounding district leaders and our local leaders to determine how we best move forward. In the coming days I will provide our community with more specifics.

This is a new reality for all and it will require all of us working together in support of our children. I know that this information brings both certainty and uncertainty for the weeks ahead. I am asking that we allow each other a measure of grace, as we develop plans for what school looks like in the weeks ahead. Now, more than ever, we must work together for the benefit of our children and our community. I thank you for being patient as we navigate this new reality.

Take good care!  Dr. Brenda Krage, Superintendent
